Apache Lake, Arizona

Apache lake is located about 65 miles northeast of Phoenix in the Tonto National Forest. This lake is the second largest of the four sister lakes on Salt River and is located between Canyon Lake and Roosevelt Lake. This 2,568-acre lake was created when Horse Mesa Dam was built in 1927. The primary function of the lake is hydroelectric power generation, water supply and flood control.

17-mile long Apache Lake offers wildlife viewing, hiking, camping, fishing, boating, picnicking and many other recreational activities. Most of the 41-mile shoreline of the lake sets alongside the Apache Trail. Apache Lake offers exceptional bank and boat fishing. A variety of game fish including walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass, redear sunfish, bluegill, channel and flathead catfish, carp, and crappie are stocked in the lake for anglers. Many fishing competitions are held at the lake frequently.

Apache Lake Marina and Resort located at the lake offers motel, gas station, coffee shop, a boat ramp, picnic supplies, dock, boat rentals, fishing and hunting licenses, restaurants, and groceries. Water sports enthusiasts can launch and explore the lake on their speed boats, water skis, jet skis, kayaks or canoes. The lake offers campers with a variety of RV and Camp sites ranging with fully equipped modern campgrounds to primitive campgrounds Hikers can find different hiking trails around the lake where they can enjoy a scenic hike. Javelina, coyotes, eagles, big horn sheep, deer, many species of birds and a variety of other desert creatures found around the lake will please many wildlife viewers. Apache Lake is a perfect recreational destination for the whole family.
