5 Places to Visit Along Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan is one of Michigan's Great Lakes, and it borders the entire western edge of the state. With a shoreline of this magnitude, you will find interesting destination points all along the edge of the lake. These destinations are not only in Michigan; Lake Michigan also borders the eastern coast of Wisconsin, as well as touching Indiana and Illinois.
Beaver Island
Beaver Island is a large island set in Lake Michigan off the northwest coast of the state of Michigan. Historically, this island had been an English monarchy; today it is a popular tourist site. The people of the island call it "America's Emerald Isle," and it is a center for tourism. There are several smaller islands that surround it, and this archipelago is known for beautiful trails for hiking, excellent fishing, and an idyllic setting for shopping, sunning, and camping.
Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes
The shoreline of Lake Michigan has been referred to as “America's Third Coast” due to its miles of sandy beaches that closely mimic those of the oceans. In northern lower Michigan, the beautiful Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore stretches up and down two counties. The dunes take their name from one dune that is roughly shaped like a giant sleeping bear. These sand dunes line the coast of the Lake Michigan, and are beautiful to view and fun to climb.
Blue Harbor Resort
In Sheboygan, Wisconsin, along the coast of Lake Michigan, rests the Blue Harbor Resort and Conference Center. The 193 guest suites, along with the condos and the 4-unit cottages, are architecturally reminiscent of the 19th century grand hotels, and the location gives visitors access to all the outdoor activities and city offerings available in this beautiful area.
Michigan's Adventure
In the southern part of Michigan, along the western shore, lies the city of Muskegon. Here you will find the fun and excitement of the Michigan's Adventure. This amusement park is built for the entertainment of adults and children alike with rides ranging from merry-go-rounds to roller coasters and a full water park as well. The park is open three seasons per year, and offers specials for school trips and groups.
Chicago, Illinois
The one area of Lake Michigan that touches Illinois meets the land at Chicago, a popular tourist spot for those looking for an exciting week or weekend of shopping dining, and sightseeing. All of this occurs with the backdrop of the beautiful Lake Michigan lapping at the shore along the city's border.

Yes, Chicago is awesome. Specially with the summers coming ... there will be so much outdoor activity. This lake I plan on making the best of it and going to all the fun nearby lakes. Btw, this site looks awesome. Such an interesting and new concept!
I have never been by Lake Michigan. This seems like a decently informative blog entry, although more information would have been helpful. I always hear about Chicago, would love to get a chance to visit sometime.
Beaver Island was once ruled by James Jesse Strang, who started an off-shoot of the Mormon Church, but it was never an English monarchy. Strang was crowned "King" by his followers and eventually forced all previous residents off the island. A fan of polygamy, he acquired five wives (the first left him with he took the second) He was shot by two disgruntled followers and died in Wisconsin. Once word got out that he had been shot, his followers were forced off the island and the previous residents returned.
Beaver Island has two lighthouses, both built in the 1800's. A population around the 500 mark. From April to December a ferry from Charlevoix, MI services the island. There are two airlines that make daily trips and are the only transportation to the mainland from December to April. Chicago is definitely the main attraction around the whole Lake Michigan. The city is full of restaurants, nightlife, and other exciting stuff.
