Dewey Lake, Kentucky
If you live in or near Prestonsburg, Kentucky, you'll love vacationing at Dewey Lake. It's easy to get to (it's just off Interstate 64E in Jenny Wiley State Park). And it's also one of the nicest lakes in Kentucky for a lake vacation.
Spend a day at Dewey Lake or spend a week. You won't run out of things to do. It's the place to be, especially if you enjoy boating. Dewey Lake has 153 open slips and four boat launch ramps. No boat of your own? No problem! Pontoons are available for rent right at the lake.
After a day of boating, why not take a nature walk? Hiking trails for every level are located near the lake, including a self-guided interpretive trail. The Sassafras, which was created by the American Hiking Society, introduces walkers to unusual flora, such as the Christmas fern and, of course, the sassafras. If it's a strenuous day of backpacking you’re after, try the Jenny Wiley Trail. At 4.5 miles (one way) it twists and turns through the kind of challenging mountainous terrain for which Appalachia is known.
As you can see, a lake vacation at Dewey Lake can involve much more than boating! Like to mountain bike? The park has three trails—the Beginner's Trail, the aptly named Switchback and the Short-Loop. And if you enjoy a round of golf, you'll love the Jenny Wiley 9-hole Executive Golf Course. Bring your own clubs or rent them for a day.
In the afternoons or evenings, take a relaxing cruise on Dewey Lake or attend one of the outdoor theater productions for which Jenny Wiley State Park is famous. Luncheon matinees, dinner theater performances and evening performances run from June through August. Past shows include Big River, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Mid-Life! The Crisis Musical.
You can find excellent accommodations at Dewey Lake too. The park has a 121-site seasonal campground. There's also May Lodge, a secluded beauty with 49 rooms. For ultimate privacy, however, why not rent a cottage? The park offers both one and two-bedroom cottages.
