19 apps that offer assistance with everything from finding the perfect destination for a lake vacation to making the most out of your time on the water. And the majority of them are free! Thanks to today’s technology, planning and enjoying a lake vacation is almost as easy as turning on your smartphone.

Apps for Finding Trails

If you’re planning a weekend fishing trip, AllTrails is the perfect app for you. Free for iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch, AllTrails is great for locating hiking, biking and jogging trails.

Looking for a campground near a lake? At under $5, the CampWhere app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch will provide you with copious information on over 9,000 public campgrounds in Canada and the USA. Using CampWhere’s geolocatable map, you can find an inexpensive camping area with nearby fishing, swimming, boating and other watersports.

Apps for Getting There

If you’re traveling to your lake vacation by car, the free app GasBuddy can help you arrive more cheaply. GasBuddy lets users locate nearby gas stations as they travel and check their gasoline prices. Each time GasBuddy users check a price, they also earn points toward giveaways, including a weekly $250 gasoline gift card.

Open Table for iPhones and Androids is a free app that makes eating well on the road easier. Like GasBuddy, it could save you a few bucks, too. With Open Table, you can find local restaurants on the road that match your budget. You can also read reviews and even make reservations. Menu Pages, a comparable restaurant app for iPhones and Androids, is also free. The vegetarian version of Open Table and Menu Pages is an app by Happy Cow called Vegout. Like its counterparts, Vegout is free for both iPhones and Androids.

AroundMe is another free app for Androids, iPhones and iPads that’s extremely convenient for travelers. It provides directions to ATMs, hospitals, parking lots and other places you might need while traveling. For those who like to shop on vacation, RetailMeNot is another handy app to have on your smartphone. Available for free, RetailMeNot will hook you up with promotional codes for businesses near wherever you are.

    These sort of apps are the kind I may look at just before I go away to the lake on a vacation but really, I don't go near my phone unless it's for an emergency whilst I am away.
