Battered and fried over a campfire, roasted whole on sticks, baked in hobo packets on hot coals—no matter how it’s fixed, freshly caught fish can be the highlight of a meal enjoyed after a day of successful fishing, that is, if the catch is properly cared for before cooking.
Lakes in Ohio

Love to fish? Ohio has numerous public fishing lakes maintained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to ensure that anglers have success catching catfish, bass, trout, yellow perch, walleye and various other species in Ohio's freshwaters. But fishing isn't the only fun for lake enthusiasts in Ohio. The ODNR's system of water trails include numerous water-based activities, from boating to waterfowl watching. Several of the trails include lakes. The Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail, for instance, is a 293-mile byway that includes fishing, wild-life watching and sailing opportunities. It also features stops at Lake Erie, the Lake Erie Islands, lighthouses, maritime museums and other historic sites. Another of Ohio's byways, the East Sandusky Bay Water Trail, also traverses the Lake Erie area. Just over 15 miles long, the circular trail offers travelers many cultural and water sport opportunities on Lake Erie's Sandusky Bay. |
